Some in the commercial IT industry, don’t seem to understand (or have not learned) how important the entire development process is to completing successful projects or programs. It’s not just moving quickly, so fast, into implementation because of pressure from the customer and sometimes your own company. Even rapid development and the iterative development process does not mean to ignore or not complete up front phases/stages, they just mean how processes/activities are completed using: a repeating of processes/activities, prototypes, mock ups, application/tools that automate activities/processes, facilitated sessions (e.g., JAD), etc. But many in the industry seems to think “just get through the front end so we can implement the project or program” We should understand by now through reasons for project failures, that it’s not just about programming/coding. That is why many in the commercial IT industry are talking about other methodologies like Extreme Programming. But understand that the practices within Extreme Programming are from a past of true and tested best and good practices, allowing for improvement and future use.
