Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification – 2010 and Beyond

Still you see local city and state layoffs and many individuals retiring from companies in several industries. We also know that project management has been significant and has contributed to the success of many projects and programs. It seems that many employers as a first step are requiring that Project managers be certified as a Project Management Professional (PMP), some/many through the Project Management Institute (PMI). I recall doing a presentation on the importance of certification (different disciplines) and how I had benefited being certified as a PMP.

Many individuals at the time challenged the requirement. I just stated that it would be important for employers, and even more so now. That was several years or so ago, and now more employers are requiring PMP certification. I have many individuals writing to me or contacting me about PMP certification and the cost. There is a difference now. The cost for certification has gone up from several hundred to several thousand dollars to complete the process for preparation and taking the test. I am just glad I took the step and obtained certification earlier and have been re-certified every three years, although I have been performing project and program management and been a project manager for over 15 years. That does not mean that I haven’ t had difficult times as well as others? No, but being PMP certified has been a benefit to me while being employed, pursuing contracts and employment.
